It's been a while.
Over the years I have seen many a film. Some would say too many (my wife..for one). However, with the advent of video and DVD's it has become even easier to keep up with the latest releases. blah blah blah....
The reason for this small entry is that it is not very often a film has a massive impact on me. In fact, I don't think other than entertainment a film has ever had an impact on me at all....a subject for debate possibly. That was until I watched 'Hostel'.
Now, I am a fan of the horror genre and have seen loads of tripe over the last 28 years or so. But some are much more entertaining than others, largely by virtue of plot rather than gore or by expedient use of humour.
Hostel is a film that disturbed me greatly. So much so that I had to watch the extras on the DVD just to placate my brain, to make sure I knew in my head that this was 'only' a film.
It's not the gore but rather the basic premise of what the story is based on.
I won't spoil, but if anyone has seen this film and wants to comment, please do. For those of you that haven't seen it...and have stong constitutions, I would suggest seeing it, if only to use it as a gauge by wich other films in the genre can be measured.
Further to this, I saw 'Severance' last night...similar in geographical location to 'Hostel' (those poor eastern europeans...I can see the tourist industry dying before it starts), gory in part..but very funny.
I'd be interested in anything anyone has to say.
